Nanakuli Student Wins 1996 International Title
Naleisha Pelekai-Wai, a sixth-grade student at Nanakuli
Elementary School, has won the title of 1996 International
Cinderella Miss.
Representing the state of Hawai`i at the Mobile, Ala.,
competition, Naleisha competed in the Miss Division along with 57
other girls from across the United States and Brazil.
This is the first year that Hawai`i sent representatives to
the international event. I am truly honored to have had the
opportunity to represent our state and to capture the title of
1996 International Cinderella Miss. This is a very prestigious
title which girls try for many years to receive. I want to share
this accomplishment with everyone in our community,
Naleisha explains.
The Cinderella International Scholarship Program believes in
the importance of education. Which I strongly believe in
also, she say.
In addition to the title, Naleisha also won more than $15,000
in prizes and gifts, including a $5,000 in cash college
scholarship, a $4,000 educational saving bond, $500 in cash, a
$400 John Robert Powers Scholarship, and official Cinderella
diamond pendant valued at $375, a wardrobe and other gifts and
prizes. She also gets a paid return trip to the 1997
International Finals for herself and a chaperon.
